far away from anywhere for flute and piano
To be far away from anywhere means for me not only to be at a great distance from every point, but to be by oneself. This will be often a state of the soul more than a physical description: You are the only one who manages, for better or worse.
At this point, time has no significance, but choice.
far away from anywhere is concerned with the idea of uncertainty and doubt that involves the state of solitude.
I have composed this work on the development of a sound spectrum, which is achieved through a time-varying analysis of a sonic event.
My starting material were the sounds of Buddhist Temples' bells. I analyzed this sound samples through the IRCAM software AudioSculpt to obtain their harmonic series or partials, which I used as pitch materials for the composition. This obtained note materials were distributed according to the volume hierarchy of the corresponding partials, in order to obtain an overall timbre analogous to the original sound.
Since the spectra are in a constant state of evolution, they will also have an influence on the structural motion and the general form of the work, however, the choice of the sequential order of the different spectra is a matter of composition. I also used the micro-changes of the spectra as modulator of the gestures in the small form.
Since the sound qualities of flute and piano are very different, they are suitable for the display of the various characters of the original sounds: they will be "re-synthesized" through the two instruments.
This work has been commissioned by Maki Ono and Daisuke Morota and is dedicated to them.
